Microscope Buying Guide in India 2020

There are several microscope options available in the market and choosing your first microscope and be tough

It’s important to note that buying a microscope is subject to personal need and preference.

What might be a valid choice for one can be completely useless for others therefore before going through this make sure to define your purpose and application.

Let’s start with some basics and look at the different parts of the microscope and how a microscope works?

Parts of a Microscope Kit

Parts of a Microscope Kit
  1. Microscope
    1. Eye Piece (Ocular Lens): part o the microscope closest to your eyes through which you look

it contains the ocular lens which makes the image produced by the objectives lenses larger

The eyepiece may be labeled with its magnification like 5x,10x,15x
    2. Revolving nosepiece: holds the objective lenses and allows you to change objectives while looking at a slide
    3. Objective: Closest to the testing sample, The objectives have a lens and a tube-like holder remount

objectives come in various powers like 5x,10,x,40x,100x,120x,etc.
    4. Stage: Flat surface o which you place slides
    5. Condenser: Standard diameter 39.5mm,

It collects and concentrates the light before it passes through the sample
    6. Coarse and Fine Adjustment: These are two knobs present on the side of the microscope body.

They adjust the position of the body allowing you to bring the sample closer to the lens
    7. Ligh Source: Depending on the type of microscope you can have a natural or artificial source of light

The light source illuminates the sample that is viewed under the lens
  2. Slides and Covers Slips: To view a sample under a microscope you would require a glass slide on which you will place the sample and a coverslip slip to cover the sample
  3. Staining Dye: It is one of the most crucial elements in microscopy,

Every object requires a unique stain to make it visible under the microscope, You will require 4-5 common stains to test multiple objects

Common dyes are Methylene blue, safranin, crystal violet, Bismarck Brown, Iodine, Eosin, etc.
  4. Other Equipment: Used in slicing and developing slides
    1. Scalpel
    2. Needle
    3. Pipette
    4. Tweezers

Types of Microscope

Types of Microscope

Based on the magnifying power and number of lens used in microscopy the microscope can be of two type

  • Simple Microscope: function on a single lens, They have a magnifying power up to 300x

The simple microscope has a natural source of light and lack a condenser
  • Complex Microscope: Function on 3-5 lenses, They have a magnifying power up to 2000x

A complex microscope have a artificial source of light and has a condenser.

Based on the number of eye piece the microscope are of 3 types

  • Ocular: Single eyepiece
  • Binocular: Two eyepieces
  • Trinocular: Three eyepieces

How does a microscope work?

Both the lenses of the microscope are convex lenses, But both have different focal lengths

lens closer to the object is the objective and has a short focal length fo usually below 1 centimeter

Lens in the eyepiece also has a short focal length but it is still bigger than that of objective lens

A revolving nosepiece known as a turret is attached to the low end of the objective the turret can be rotated to change the power magnification as necessary below

The objective sits a flat platform known as the stage, on the surface of the stage two stage clips hold the slide above a small aperture

This aperture allows light to pass through the sample into the body of the microscope

Ray Optics

How does a microscope work?

object o is placed just outside fo the focus of the objective lens, a real inverted and magnified image I1 is formed

The magnified image I1 acts as an object for the eyepiece lens, The eyepiece is adjusted such that the image i1 lies within the focus of the IPS F II

eyepiece functions as magnifying glass and forms a virtual array and magnified image I to of the object magnification of the microscope

The magnifying power of a lens is expressed in diameters, a magnification of five diameters and is written as 5 X

The total magnification of a compound microscope is the product of the magnifying power of the objective and the magnifying power of the eyepiece

for example if the objective has a magnification of 40 X and that of the eyepiece is 10 X then the magnifying power of the microscope is 400X

Things to look for while buying a microscope

  • Determining the right microscope for yourself: Everyone’s application of microscope are different

Do not get attracted by high levels of magnification in a microscope as most applications require a magnification of less than 600x

If you are buying the microscope for high school academics make sure it has a minimum magnification of 400x
  • Compound Vs Stereo Microscope:

If you want to look for “smaller” specimens like blood droplets or spores, onion peels, etc. You would require a compound microscope

If you require a compound microscope the next thing you need to determine is whether you require a ocular, binocular or trinocular eye piece

For school students we would strongly recommend a ocular microscope, Once you are in collage and have made a decision to pursue a career in biology you can go for a binocular or a trinocular model

If you want to inspect bigger specimens like bugs, leaves and insects you should go for a Simple/Stereo microscope

Most simple microscope offer magnification from 6.5x-45x
  • Check for slides, coverslips and stains: Many microscopes come as a kit containing slides cover slips and stains

But not all microscopes come with slides, cover slips and stains so make sure while buying that you have those.

Ideally for beginners you should have about 10-15 slides and about 3-4 commonly used stains
  • Warranty and Return Policy: Most microscopes come with a 1 year warrant, Make sure to have a warranty.

I do not say this fr most products but with microscopes make sure that you have a 10 day return policy,

You may have wrong expectation of the product and you may end up with a particularly heavy or fragile microscope.

You would want your microscope to at least work well for 2-3 years so if you feel the device is fragile make sure to return it.

Best Microscope Brands in India Online

Though there are many brands available in the market I would only recommend a few, At my university, I have come across several brands and I find the following ones to be the best

  • E S A W (The Engineering Science Apparatus Workshop): Indian
  • Gemkolabwell: Indian
  • Celestron: United States

Why is microscope the best gift for kids

Microscopes are the curiosity lamps for kids, My brother got his first microscope in 5th standard and he got hooked on it

He would spend days just peeling off vegetables, skin cells, cheek swabs, some blood drops and would show everyone what he had discovered.

These microscopes really got him interested in biology and now he has completed Ph.D. in microbiology and is working for a big pharmaceutical company.

I believe that gift really inspired him and help his curiosity a take off .

There are many things you can gift a child but a gift of curiosity is just amazing, Not everyone likes science but as a kid he/she will definitely find this gift to be interesting.
